Kashagan technology plan
OTM assisted and facilitated the development of a technology plan for the Kashagan field development in the Caspian Sea, one of the largest projects worldwide. Work included designing, planning and facilitating a technology workshop involving all Kashagan licence partners, to identify technical challenges and map potential technology solutions on to these challenges, conducting a number of investigative interviews with specialists on each technology area using a specially-designed process template for data gathering and value analysis, and developing and ranking plans to address each identified technology issue. Corporate technology strategy
OTM assisted a major oil company with development of its new corporate technology strategy. This work included review, constructive challenge and recommendations regarding the strategy development process, guidance and assistance with definition of graphical technology roadmaps for key technology areas – including the development of visionary objectives, value indicators and key activities/ milestones for each technology, assistance with analysis of competitive position, and review of overall industry context and trends. Accelerating technology deployment
OTM carried out research and analysis, and subsequently provided advice to the Middle East operating company of an international oil company, regarding how they could most effectively accelerate the deployment of new technology . Work included benchmarking of technology deployment processes and schedules and the proposal of new procedures which are now adopted by management. Client: Confidential international oil company
North sea technology plan
OTM carried out a peer review of the technology planning and management process within BP's North Sea business unit, and subsequent re-development of their Technology Plan. Client: BP
Arctic technology plan
OTM worked with a major oil company to develop an Arctic technology plan, relevant to a number of their undeveloped assets. OTM planned and facilitated an opportunity identification workshop (to identify and rank business drivers and technical challenges), accompanied by preliminary research to identify potential technology ‘hotspots’ (key research institutes etc) and solutions (that met the prioritised technical challenges) and their suppliers. Asset technology needs analysis
OTM planned and facilitated a series of technology needs workshops for a major oil company, for the identification of technical challenges amongst different assets worldwide (including UK, India and Trinidad), to enable an improved linking of assets’ technical challenges, associated technology needs and opportunities, and the subsequent corporate technology programme. Asset technology plan, Libya
OTM assisted and facilitated the development of a technology plan for a large mature onshore field in Libya. Work included facilitating a technology workshop to identify technical challenges and brainstorm potential technology solutions, followed by market research to identify existing and emerging technology solutions which might potentially meet the identified technical challenges, and development of plans to access selected technologies. Technology needs survey
OTM has recently completed a pan-industry survey of technology needs and opportunities in the drilling, production and facilities sectors of the oil and gas industry, through two of the European pan-industry networks which it manages - the Drilling Engineering Association (Europe) and Production Engineering Association - which comprise more than 20 oil company members. Research has been carried out amongst both business unit and technology staff from the oil company members, and the analysed results disseminated to major technology suppliers, RTOs and technology SMEs to provide guidance on user needs. Oil company's technology needs review
OTM was commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI, UK Government) to identify oil companies’ worldwide technology needs for a medium-term time horizon and provide recommendations to the DTI to ensure support to technology suppliers was aligned with market demand. OTM gathered and analysed technology needs to draw out priorities and recommendations on where and how to focus attention optimally for the benefit of UK suppliers
Differentiating technologies identification
OTM assisted a major oil company with the identification of corporate ‘differentiating technologies’. Work included process design, followed by the identification of ‘candidate technologies’ using extensive internal interviewing of corporate and technical management, review of industry benchmarks and analysis of competitor technology capabilities. The potential impact and feasibility of these candidate technologies was then analysed and a ‘shortlist’ agreed, in an internal workshop. Client: BG Group
InsideTrack™ - technology planning process
OTM has developed a structured process for technology planning, called InsideTrack™. OTM's process uses a systematic approach to technology value creation, through 5 steps: i) Opportunity identification (identifying asset business drivers, technical challenges, and value of 'solving' each technical challenge with appropriate technology) ii) Market intelligence (mapping known technologies, products and providers to the technical challenges) iii) Product/ technology and supplier selection (ranking potential technologies and providers) iv) Technology implementation planning (developing technology business cases and rolling up into overall technology plan) v) Post-implementation technology value and sustainability assessment (tracking of actual value realised over an extended period)
Oil and gas supply chain mapping
OTM carried out a comprehensive supply chain mapping exercise for the whole energy sector (oil and gas, power generation and renewables) to assess the sectoral strengths and weaknesses of 24 supply chains, enabling appropriate public-sector intervention mechanisms to be identified and implemented. Work included literature review, drafting of maps, validation of maps through more than 20 interviews and peer-review workshops, and development of conclusions regarding supply chain strengths/ weaknesses and cross-cutting capabilities, and recommendations for interventions. National subsea test centre - feasibility study
OTM carried out a study to determine the requirement or otherwise for a National Subsea Test Centre (NSTC) in the UK. A detailed segmentation of the subsea market (including marine renewables) was performed, followed by an analysis of current and future business drivers and associated market and technology trends, and a gap analysis comparing future demand for subsea testing and current supply of subsea test facilities. Scottish Enterprise and DTI
OTM provided assistance to Scottish Enterprise and DTI (renamed DECC) with market and technical research regarding the subsea sector, involving more than 20 interviews with senior industry representatives, followed by a series of industry consultations (both workshops and one-to-one meetings), and subsequent business plan development, launch and early service-provision for SubseaUK, a new initiative to raise the profile of the UK subsea sector and assist the whole UK subsea chain to collaborate more effectively. This culminated in the organisation of SubseaUK's first annual showcase, which had more than 800 registered delegates. Client: Scottish Enterprise and DTI
